High Temperature Castors and Low Temperature Castors

Castors for High and Low Temperatures

The standard wheels and castors we supply have a temperature range of 5°C to 60°. Within this range the products work normally for their full working life. For applications with temperatures outside this range we can supply specialised high temperature wheels.

High Temperature Castor Use:

  • As temperatures increase wheels become weaker and this lowers the load capacity.
  • In static (non-moving) applications with sustained high temperatures over long periods of time the material will begin to deteriorate

NOTE: Clients must specify the temperature and type of application when ordering High Temperature castors to ensure that the appropriate wheel type is selected. This can be done in the “Order Instructions/Comments” section of the Checkout and we will contact you to verify your selection.

1) Glass Filled Nylon Wheels 150 - 210°C

  • Best choice for Hospitality based applications such as ‘food baking’ ovens. 
  • Can withstand sustained high temperatures and are gentle and quiet on most floor surfaces.
  • The preferred wheel for extended periods of up to 210°C (assuming most of their life is spent outside the oven), and for short periods up to 230°C.

2) Phenolic Wheels 100 - 300°C

  • More brittle than Glass Filled Nylon and has a shorter life cycle.
  • Can go up to very high temperatures. 
  • Suitable for very high temperature light duty Industrial applications such as ovens used for curing paint. 
  • Load capacity decreases from 125kg at 100°C to 40kg at 300°C
  • Phenolic wheels (with special inorganic fillers and PTFE bushes) are preferred for extended periods up to 280°C if most of their life is spent outside the oven and for short periods up to 300°C. These have a thick cross section, but are more brittle than either nylon or ordinary grades of Phenolic.

WARNING: Phenolic wheels are not suitable for medium duty applications or applications where wheels are subjected to impact


3) Cast Iron Wheels 200 - 400°C

  • Best choice for Industrial based applications such as ‘paint curing’ ovens and in sustained high temperature environments.
  • Can withstand extreme high temperatures as well as higher load capacities than all other wheel types.
  • Have a plain bore fitted with an axle spacer that is lubricated with high temperature grease that can be used up to 230°C for long periods
  • For temperatures that exceed 230°C more exotic grease is required. Speak to us about your requirements.

WARNING: Cast Iron is heavy, noisy and may damage concrete floors and other floor surfaces.


 Low Temperature Castor Use:

  • As standard bearing grease begins to stiffen below 5°C it is necessary to specify temperature of use at the time of ordering. 
  • We will then use a special aeronautical grease that is compounded for use down to -30°C). Generally it will need to be refreshed every 6 - 12 months.
  • At lower temperatures the softer rubber and polyurethane treads on wheels become less elastic. Polyurethane can stiffen from +20°C down to -20°C, but then rapidly stiffen until at -50°C it becomes brittle.
  • Below 5°C, nylon can become brittle and a fibreglass reinforced wheel, which can be used down to -30°C is recommend.
